Jewelery shops in Bhubaneswar and Puri raided; Know the details
Ahead of Dhanteras, separate teams from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department carried out simultaneous raids on jewelery shops in Bhubaneswar and Puri on Friday. The raids were carried out on the charges of the jewelry stores in tax evasion.
In Bhubaneswar, TPS detectives swooped down on a well-known jewelry store on Janpath. Acting under the direction of the co-commissioner, an audit was also carried out.
Similarly, another team of TPS detectives raided a jewelry store and the owner’s home in City of Puri on charges of tax evasion. The shop is located at Nayak Plaza. The raids continued throughout the day.
However, the jewelry store owners alleged that they were unnecessarily harassed during the Dhanteras era.
“Raids are carried out when they have specific complaints of tax evasion against specific stores. They were in our shop not to raid but to audit. But since it is Dhanteras time, it is an inopportune time to audit. It is hampering our business,” lamented Goura Triwal, owner of the jewelry store, in Bhubaneswar.
When asked, Commercial Tax Officer (CTO), Bhubaneswar, Purna Chandra Murmu said, “We are checking their stocks, books of accounts and related documents to find out if they are evading the tax or not.
In particular, jewelry stores are witness to great attendance on the occasion of Dhanteras. If their one-day sales were added up, it would be in quintals. This year, Dhanteras falls on October 23.
